Marking VE Day with Family, Remembrance and Afternoon Tea

This month, Alexander House opened its doors and gardens for a very special event, as residents and their loved ones gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, reminisce and pay respects to those who fought for us.
The day was filled with warmth and meaning as families joined residents to reflect, reminisce and celebrate together. Union Jack bunting fluttered in the breeze, and red poppies adorned tables, setting the tone for an afternoon of tribute and togetherness. Our team worked hard to bring the spirit of VE Day to life both indoors and out.

Our residents celebrated with a traditional afternoon tea, served in the lounge and on the patio, with plenty of homemade treats including cream scones topped with strawberries, rich chocolate brownies and freshly baked sponge cake. It was lovely to see people sharing smiles, stories and memories over cups of tea and glasses of wine, as music from the wartime era played gently in the background.
One particularly touching moment came with the display of original World War II medals that were carefully arranged and presented in pride of place for all to see. The medals were once worn by a soldier who had served during the war and were a poignant reminder of the real lives behind the history. For many of our residents, the sight of these medals stirred powerful memories, and there were many conversations about how life now is different to 80 years ago.
The afternoon was not only a chance to honour the past but to celebrate the resilience of those who lived through it. Some residents recalled where they were on VE Day in 1945, while others simply enjoyed the chance to be surrounded by family and friends in a familiar, comforting setting. The presence of relatives made the day all the more special, with three generations coming together to listen, remember and enjoy one another’s company.

At Alexander House, events like these reflect our commitment to recognising the lives our residents have lived and the stories that have shaped them. VE Day offered a moment to pause and remember, but also to connect, laugh and create new memories which are just as important as the ones we hold dear.
