Animal Therapy at Alexander House

Here at Alexander House, we’re always looking for ways to bring smiles and new experiences to our residents. Recently, we welcomed some very special visitors who reminded us just how powerful animal therapy can be.
A Visit from Lakemoor Alpacas
Our day was brightened by the arrival of Wayfarer and Powerball, two friendly alpacas from Lakemoor Alpacas. Residents and team members alike were charmed by their gentle nature and soft fleece. Everyone enjoyed feeding them carrots and learning fascinating alpaca facts, did you know they hum softly to communicate with each other?
The alpacas’ calm and curious presence brought plenty of laughter and conversation. Encounters like these are more than just fun, they help reduce stress, lift mood, and encourage social interaction. By the end of the visit, many of us were joking that we’d love to have an alpaca of our own in the garden!

Meeting Exotic Creatures with Animals 2U South West
Our next animal therapy session took us on an entirely different kind of adventure. The team from Animals 2U South West introduced us to a collection of fascinating creatures, including stick insects, mice and geckos.
The visit sparked curiosity and excitement, with residents eager to learn more about each animal. Some preferred to observe, while others were brave enough to hold the animals and experience them up close. It was wonderful to see the sense of wonder and accomplishment as residents stepped outside their comfort zones and had a lot of fun in the process!

Why Animal Therapy Matters
Animal visits bring so much more than smiles. They help reduce loneliness, lower anxiety and provide a soothing sense of connection. For many residents, spending time with animals can evoke happy memories and create meaningful new ones. The joy of stroking a soft coat, feeding a gentle creature or simply watching animals move and interact has a calming and uplifting effect on everyone.
At Alexander House, we believe these moments of connection are an important part of life in our home, helping residents stay active, engaged and emotionally fulfilled.
We’re already looking forward to welcoming our next furry (or scaly!) visitors soon.
